Remilia Scarlet, a prominent character in the Touhou Project series, is a vampire of noble lineage and the head of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. With her fascinating backstory, complex personality, and iconic appearance, she has become a beloved figure among Touhou fans.

Born over 500 years ago, Remilia hails from a powerful line of vampires, with her sister Flandre Scarlet being the only other surviving member of their clan. As a vampire, Remilia possesses extraordinary powers, such as superhuman strength, the ability to fly, and control over fate and destiny. However, she also shares the typical weaknesses of vampires, including sensitivity to sunlight and the constant need for fresh blood.

Despite her immortal status, Remilia appears as a youthful and petite girl, often seen in her signature red and black attire. As the owner and ruler of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, she commands respect and loyalty from her fairy maids and enjoys an extravagant lifestyle in her opulent mansion located in the misty realms of Gensokyo.

Remilia’s personality is just as captivating as her appearance. She is often portrayed as proud, confident, and somewhat arrogant, reflecting her noble background. Her demeanor exudes an aura of superiority and regality, emphasizing her status as a powerful vampire. Yet beneath this proud exterior lies a multi-layered character with a range of emotions and traits.

Though Remilia may seem aloof at times, she occasionally shows signs of loneliness and a desire for companionship. To keep herself entertained, she engages in various activities, from playing games to hosting grand events. Her longing for attention and recognition stems from her eternal existence, as she has witnessed countless generations pass by while she remains unchanged.

One of the most endearing aspects of Remilia’s personality is her mischievous and playful side. She is known to pull pranks and engage in witty banter with other characters in the Touhou series, showcasing a more lighthearted aspect of her nature that adds depth to her character.

As a central figure in many Touhou game titles, Remilia has been involved in various storylines and interactions with other characters, especially her sister Flandre. These encounters shed light on her complex family dynamics and the challenges she faces as a vampire aristocrat. Her experiences often lead to conflicts and dilemmas that force Remilia to confront her vulnerabilities and limitations.

Remilia’s journey throughout the Touhou series delves into themes of isolation, identity, and the search for meaning. As a vampire who has existed for centuries, she wrestles with her own existence and role in the ever-changing world of Gensokyo. Her character development is marked by moments of introspection and growth as she seeks to find purpose in her immortal life.

Remilia Scarlet is undoubtedly one of the most captivating characters in the Touhou Project. Her rich backstory as a vampire noble, combined with her multifaceted personality, brings a level of depth and intrigue to the series. Whether through her aristocratic elegance, mischievous pranks, or moments of vulnerability, Remilia remains a fan favorite, drawing players into the mystical world of Gensokyo. Her lasting impact on the Touhou universe makes her an unforgettable character who continues to enchant fans across the world.

Abilities of Remilia Scarlet

Vampiric Abilities

Remilia Scarlet, as a vampire, possesses extraordinary physical and magical abilities. Her strength and speed are beyond human limits, allowing her to perform feats like uprooting a thousand-year-old tree with ease and moving faster than the eye can follow. In Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, it is noted that vampires can run through the Human Village in an instant and have the power to crush boulders. Remilia’s profile in Immaterial and Missing Power further describes her as having the ability to fly around the Moon in a short period, showcasing her incredible speed and endurance.

In addition to these impressive physical capabilities, vampires like Remilia have the ability to summon and control a vast number of devils with just a shout. They can also shape-shift into a swarm of bats or even mist to evade attacks, and as long as their head remains intact, they can regenerate their entire body overnight. These traits make vampires one of the most powerful species in Gensokyo.

Remilia can shape-shift into a bat, but unlike most vampires, her bat wings remain visible even in her human form, preventing her from fully disguising herself as a human. Despite her ability to summon devils, the Scarlet Devil Mansion currently employs only one little devil, often seen around the mansion’s library, with the rest of her staff consisting mostly of fairy maids. The reason behind this unusual staffing choice remains a mystery.

Additionally, vampires like Remilia are immortal, sacrificing growth and maturity in exchange for eternal life.

Manipulation of Fate

One of Remilia’s most intriguing abilities is her power to manipulate fate. However, there is little detailed information available in the world of Gensokyo about how this power works or how Remilia uses it. If she could truly manipulate fate at will, one would expect her to always come out victorious in battle. Yet, Remilia does experience losses, suggesting that the power might not be as all-encompassing as it sounds. It’s also possible that the rules of spell card battles restrict her ability, much like how Reimu Hakurei cannot fully exploit her ability to float out of reality during battles.

It is unclear whether Remilia consciously controls her manipulation of fate or if it passively affects the things around her. For instance, it is suggested in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense that those near Remilia might experience bad fortune, similar to how Hina Kagiyama spreads curses and misfortune simply by being close to others. However, this effect is difficult to measure, and no one can say for certain when or if Remilia is actively using her power.

Additionally, it is said that Remilia can cause significant changes in someone’s life with just a word, though again, this is not something that can be easily observed or quantified. Flandre Scarlet, Remilia’s younger sister, once suggested in Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red that Remilia’s power might simply be knowing what will happen in the future. However, Flandre also hinted that Remilia might just enjoy talking about her power in a grandiose way, possibly exaggerating its true extent.

In several of Remilia’s spell cards, she utilizes red chains that chase her enemies, symbolizing her connection to destiny. These chains are often associated with fate, providing a visual representation of her power in action.
